MEET OUR PERSONAL TRAINERS IN PERTH, SCOTLAND

I constantly use myself as a case study because like you, I don’t fit into a conventional box.

From early morning starts at 5am, sometimes having no time for lunch and nothing more than a 30 minute window to have a workout I have to constantly develop eating strategies and exercise routines that will fit into any lifestyle. I’m living proof that busy lives doesn’t have to mean poor health and that fitness ‘rules’ and guidelines are meant to be bent and broken to mould around even the most unique of lifestyles.

I believe you must prioritise your health and fitness if you want to thrive in today’s world.

That includes what food you eat and when you eat it, your activity level, stress levels, sleep quality and mental health.

These are already a part of your life whether you like it or not and with just a little focus and guidance you can easily optimise them all for maximum impact on your life.

I also believe that your health is THE single most important asset you have in an unpredictable world. And everyone — from entrepreneurs and business professionals to busy Mums and everyone in between— needs to prioritise it.

Having had a previous career in the British Armed Forces, playing numerous sports, self experimentation and over 10,000 hours of personal training I know what works... and what doesn’t!

My goal is to make you leaner, healthier and happier by giving you knowledge, tools and motivation that you can immediately use to improve your body and your life. Translation?.... I'm here to make you look and feel your best.

Being the best you can be means more than just looking good. It means unlocking your physical potential, nurturing your health through good nutrition & functional movement and making sense of your emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.

Stephen in one sentence….

Fitness, Family and Fun, not necessarily in that order.

“Have body confidence, be your own you and have fun with your training!”

After studying and working within sport for 8 years, I realised my passion for personal training at a later stage than most. I've always had a passion for health and fitness, studying sport science to degree level at university and sports coaching prior to that at college.. But never had the urge to be a personal trainer, So why?

With working alongside personal trainers in different local football clubs it was easy for me to see how rewarding the job was, I also received many different sessions from many different trainers, throughout this time my interest started to grow. As my knowledge became greater I then took the plunge into my personal training journey by becoming fully qualified myself and have never looked back!

Plus I get to wear a pair of trainers to work everyday! How cool is that?!

I realise effective training and having a “balanced diet” can be tricky at times, especially when you lack the knowledge and sometimes the motivation. This is where I can help you and most importantly we'll have fun doing so! With over 8 years of coaching experience I know the importance of tailoring my advice to each individual. Everyone has their own exercise and diet history so I adapt my advice to suit. Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is less and sometimes you have to forget all of that and just do some squats.

They say “if you enjoy your job you'll never work a day in your life”, I couldn't agree more with that and I am very fortunate to found something I love!

Nick's training philosophy -

“Fitness isn't about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than you used to be”

My journey into Health and Fitness started with martial arts. I began training in 2007 at the age of 17 and quickly became obsessed. I gained my black belt after 3 years of hard training. I then went on to continue my training in Karate as well as other martial arts like Jujitsu. I also took on greater responsibility in Japan Karate Shotorenmie by becoming a club instructor at JKS Perth and gaining my 2nd Dan black belt in 2015. This was a great way for me to develop my teaching and coaching abilities. I was fortune enough to teach adults and children in large and small group environments.

As fitness and health goes hand in hand with martial arts I have always done a form of physical exercise ranging from barbells to kettlebells and other methods. I decided to do my HNC in fitness health and Exercise at UHI Perth in 2010. I then went to Stevenson College in Edinburgh for the HND level and finished my degree back in Perth. The degree course gave me a list of industry qualifications including my personal trainer certificate as well as working with people from different backgrounds and abilities. I then went on to work at Bannatynes gym where I gained more valuable experience working with the general public teaching small and large functional fitness group classes before moving on to Stephen Clarke Fitness.

Through working with athletes and the general population I have developed a passion for helping people improve their quality of life through physical exercise. The process of helping people gain physical and mental strength that exercise can bring and guiding them to their goals allows me to work with passion for what I do. I believe everyone has their own unique requirements when it comes to physical activity. This is where one to one training becomes extremely valuable. I can take the time to turn my clients weaknesses into strengths and improve multiple physical attributes like Strength, speed, power and mobility. This always allows clients to leave training with more confidence than when they arrived. I believe training should be fun and productive, there is always a way to make this happen!

For almost five years I worked in a job which was not rewarding in the slightest, I worked from 4am to 12pm, went to Judo at night, ate, slept and repeated Monday to Friday. In 2017 the opportunity to complete my level 1 UKCC Judo coaching presented itself and looking for a challenge I enrolled.  It was during this course that my affinity for coaching became apparent and once completed I sought another means of furthering my personal development. In my quest for improvement I began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in April of the same year, given that it was completely new to me it was a humbling experience and served to elucidate how much there was still to learn- even after training and competing in Judo for 7 years!  It became increasingly obvious that I love learning and need to be challenged in order to evolve.

It was for this reason that I decided to complete both my HNC and HND Fitness, Health and Exercise at Perth UHI and in the process attain:  Exercise to Music, Level 2 Gym Instructor, Group Cycle Instructor and my Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications.  During this time, I have read voraciously and watched countless hours on the subject of strength and conditioning as well as sleep, nutrition and meditation.

I truly love health and fitness and relish the opportunity to aid others in their journey to achieve goals they never thought possible. I want to make your experience as enjoyable as it is rewarding as well as educate you on the subject. I believe that no man or woman should forego the privilege that comes with improving both mind and body.

John's favourite quote:

“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.”
